Abstract
This paper discusses the social inclusion of former slaves and their descendants after the abolition of slavery in central-southern Brazil, on the basis of oral archives established through interviews made in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. These interviews were used to discover the meanings attributed by descendants of former slaves to terms such as slavery and freedom, in the context of the formation of family memory.
