Abstract
This paper offers an overview of the history of the kingdom of the Congo since the conversion of its king to catholicism in the fifteenth century until the movement known as Antonianismo which occurred at the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century. Its main focus is on the process of conversion of the kingdom of Congo to catholicism, the adoption of Portuguese institutions and the relations between Portugal and the Congo in the contexto of the Atlantic slave trade. It studies in some detail the crisis of the seventeenth century in that African region, after the battle of Mbwilla, and the meaning of the religious and rebellious local movement known as Antonianismo.
