Abstract
The article studies critically the liberal interpretation of concepts such as citizenship, freedom and participation in ancient Greece. This is done by developping four items: 1. Antiquity and the issue of political representation in contemporary political thought; 2. a political choice leading to the construction of a historiographic model; 3. ancient political ideology and the issues of political participation and political apathy; 4. the data: everyday political life of the Athenian citizen. From the study of these four items, the article concludes that the liberal interpretation is insufficient in many aspects. Also, that such interpretation has as its hidden object to legitimize the small participation afforded the citizens in contemporary democracies: this is done through defining an irreducible otherness of ancient democracy.
